Sovereign Grace’s Psalms
August 8, 2008
Sovereign Grace Ministries held their biennial worship conference, WorshipGod 08, last week at Covenant Life Church in Maryland. Themed “Rediscovering the Psalms,” the conference was a mental and spiritual feast on many levels. I’ll be sharing reflections from the conference next week. Today I want to review the CD they released in conjunction with the conference.
Psalms
Psalms is the latest recording project from Sovereign Grace Music. Since first learning of their work a few years ago through the recommendation of a close friend, the songs that have received the most play on my iPod have been from Sovereign Grace. I’ve said it before, and it bears repeating, that the lyrics to each and every song on a SGM project are soaked in scriptural truth. There is no ambiguity and there is no fluff in this material. The Psalms project proves to be no different. In fact, I believe Psalms is their strongest release to date.
From the ebullient opening track entitled “You Will Never Change” to the stately “Glorious and Mighty” to the hopeful “The Lord Is” to the quietly victorious “Blessed Is the One,” this CD will serve you well in your times of private worship because it covers the gamut of emotions the psalmists expressed. If you’re a worship leader, it will also serve you because there are several tracks on the project that you should strongly consider using in your ministry.
As is the case with all of Sovereign Grace’s material, the result of theologically weighty material is that the material is often wordy. It could take your congregation a bit longer to learn and internalize some of the pieces on this project, so be gentle and judicious.
Free Download
Sovereign Grace is currently (at the time this article was posted) offering a free download of the second track on the album, “Praise the Lord.” You have to go through the process as if you were buying the song, but the price is free.
Sovereign Grace says on their website, “Our aim [with Psalms] is to offer fresh interpretations of individual psalms, especially in light of the crucified and risen Savior to whom they point.” They hit the mark, and in doing so they have provided the body of Christ with a great gift.
