The Question That Changed Everything
October 28, 2008
In the fourth chapter of the Gospel of John, Jesus encounters a Samaritan woman at a well while his disciples go into town for food. Notice that Jesus was the first to engage in conversation. Two things about this passage are striking. First, Jesus was Jewish and the woman was Samaritan. Neither culture liked the other; in fact, there was a great deal of disdain for one another. The second issue here is that they are of opposite genders; when the disciples return, they were stunned to see Jesus speaking with a woman.
Jesus surprised the woman and asked her for water. “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” That one question was about to turn her world upside down. “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
In your private worship times, how often have you asked a question of God the answer to which completely altered the way you view God or the world? Every once in a while, God will let us see just a little bit more of his glory. And our lives are changed forever.
