Cataloging Worship References

I mentioned in an earlier post that I wanted to read through the Bible with the specific goal of cataloging all references to worship and music (worship being the focus; if I need to, I’ll go through later and mark specific references to music). Below are the criteria I’ll be using to complete this project. What am I missing here? Anything that will make the job more complete and useful?

  • All references to worship, regardless of object (God, idols, kings, etc.)
  • Note the word(s) used in the original language (for later cross referencing)
  • Context of the reference to worship
  • Include references to ritual sacrific
  • References to music
  • Context of the reference to music (worship, martial, celebration, lament, etc.)
  • Do I need to note the word(s) used in the original language?

I will attempt to complete at least the worship portion of the project within one year, although I won’t rush through it just to say I did it in a year. Once the first phase is complete, I’ll go back and cross reference the words used for worship against how they’re translated in other contexts. for example, I happen to know one word often translated as “worship” is also sometimes translated as service. So I’ll cross reference those words to get a more complete biblical picture of the subject.

What do you think?

    1. [...] I have started my project of cataloging references to worship in the Bible. I will be updating the file as I go along, but here is the current document with a few references from Genesis and the Psalms. I’ve included in the document’s footer when the last update was so you’ll know if it’s current or not. [...]
