The Apostles Creed CD

The Apostles CreedI have all four the New Irish Hymns CDs (the first was titled In Christ Alone in the United States and New Irish Hymns elsewhere). All four are studio productions as opposed to live worship events that were recorded for release. There is a sense of freshness among them and they are exciting to hear. In that sense, I was disappointed with The Apostles Creed. NOT the material itself; Getty’s and Townend’s materials are always solid and worthy of consideration. Whereas the four New Irish Hymns CDs do not feel like studio productions, The Apostles Creed sounds far too much like a studio production. Contemporary Christian Music artists such as Christine Dente and Susan Ashton have been allowed to give their musical styling to Getty’s music and the result is a lackluster project.

Some of the material on the CD is repeated from previous projects (perhaps that’s why I don’t care for this CD; I’ve heard the previous material performed better on other projects) and some of the material is new. The CD walks through the Apostles’ Creed and seeks to partner songs with the major aspects of the creed. That, I think, is a very interesting concept. And Keith and Stuart could have presented the material in a manner more conducive for corporate and/or private worship.

If you really like studio productions, or if you haven’t heard enough good live productions, this CD may be useful to you. If you enjoy and appreciate good quality live production recordings, you probably won’t have much use for The Apostles Creed. HOWEVER, don’t let this one bad project keep you from staying up with Getty’s and Townend’s material. As I have said before, their songs will be around decades after they’re gone because they’re that good.
