The sunset tonight in the Lowcountry of South Carolina was absolutely stunning! Certainly there is beauty all over this country and indeed the world and universe. But unless you have ever seen a Lowcountry sunset, you are truly missing a blessing. The deep and rich colors as the sun reflects over the marshes and rivers is almost breathtaking at times. It reminds me of one of my favorite psalms, Psalm 8.
1 O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babes and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him . . .
To look at the beauty of God’s creation and then read in Psalm 8 that as marvelous as that creation is, God still holds us in such high regard is perhaps one of the most humbling and awe-inspiring thoughts I can imagine. God, in His infinite wisdom and sovereignty, the One who placed the sun in perfect angle over the waterways so they would reflect just the right amount of light and create those stunning colors, loves us and has made us in His image. I am left to ask, “Why, God, are you mindful of me?” And then I simply say, “Thank you.”
