This is Part 4 of a multi-part series on The Most Stunning Question Ever Asked. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
One of the things that makes Jesus’ question so stunning is that, while He is asking “Why Me?” we should be asking “Why not me?” He was crucified because of my sin. Yes, the very specific sin of blowing my horn on the freeway the other day when someone cut me off and literally endangered the lives of my family and me. Blowing my horn was okay because he did need to know I was there; the attitude with which I leaned into it was paid for by Christ. Yes, the very specific sin that you can likely recall committing earlier today. Yes, specific sins. All of them ever committed by believers.
Christ’s sacrifice paid our debt in full and now provides us a way into the presence of God Almighty. Without Christ’s atoning death, we would never even have a right to be in His presence. It is Christ’s death that provides us the right to worship. He ushers us into the High Holy Place, and the path there is stained by His blood.
When we look on the cross and hear Jesus asking, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” It takes our breath away, because we understand the weight of the situation. We understand what Jesus is asking.
