The Southern Baptist Convention

Immediately after our worship service tomorrow I will be heading to Greensboro, North Carolina, to attend the 2006 Southern Baptist Convention. Since I’m just beginning this blog I won’t get into why I believe this is the most important convention in perhaps thirty years, but it is. For the first time in many years there is more than one candidate for each of the major officer positions. Obviously, the most visible position to which messengers will elect someone is that of President. Frank Page, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Taylors, South Carolina; Ronnie Floyd, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Springdale, Arkansas and The Church at Pinnacle Hills; and Jerry Sutton, pastor of Two Rivers Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, will all be nominated.

I’ll also be attending the Pastor’s Conference prior to the convention. I’ve never attended this pastor’s conference and am looking forward to what appears to be an exciting docket. I’ll post updates as I think they need to be published, so it won’t necessarily be live-blogging. But you’ll be able to stay up-to-date on the goings on at the convention.

Please be in prayer for the convention. The messengers and leaders need much wisdom and humility and we’ll only gain true unity as we focus on the One to Whose purposes we have been called.

  1. [...] Last year I said the 2006 convention was the most important in perhaps thirty years. It was. And immediately afterward, I said that the 2007 would be equally important. Why? Because great strides were made in Greensboro and with the next convention taking place in Texas, some would try to overturn some of those accomplishments. For example, I’m hearing rumors that Dr. Frank Page may have an opponent for his re-election bid for SBC President. Usually, first term presidents aren’t opposed, especially if they’ve done a good job, as Dr. Page certainly has. Hopefully the rumors are wrong. [...]
